Are the encoders and decoders in this kit also encoding the data in a format so that if I just start streaming serial data, in most cases the same data comes out the other end? What I'm looking for are TX/RX devices where I don't have to do the modulation in the microprocessor. Thank you.

Yes, they are simple OOK (On-Off Keying) devices. For this you do not want the TXE and RXD, but just the TX and RX versions. Since if you are sending serial data, you don't want the decoder to interfere with the data you are trying to receive. We re-used the TX433 and RX433 in our latest kits, the wireless IR repeaters (RRW1A and RRW1B). We have also tested them with serial data from the PC, and they work great with lower baud rates (2400 baud).
